We don't have any confirmation on the rumor itself, but the official trailer for Fable 4 gives the description "Fable returns with a new beginning for the legendary franchise. Talk about a reset. It sounds too ridiculous to be true, but it also sounds like a perfectly fine excuse to wipe the slate clean, which would allow a new studio more creative freedom. While “lead writer” and “narrative lead” might sound interchangeable, narrative design is a wide-reaching discipline that shapes the player’s interaction with a game’s story. Megill has an extensive history in games narrative, having worked on franchises like Guild Wars and Dishonored, and recently as narrative lead on Control. Fable 4 picked up a new narrative leadĪnna Megill, already the lead writer on the Fable reboot, was promoted in July to Fable’s narrative lead, as Megill confirmed on Twitter. "Fable’s clearly always been a little more light-hearted and a little more British, I think I could say, and I think Playground will keep it there," Phil Spencer said in 2021. Playground beefed up a new Warwickshire studio just for it, so this definitely isn't a small-time Fable spinoff. In light of these leaks, it's quite possible that the unannounced Fable sequel will be officially revealed at the event with more details about the story and gameplay.According to a 2018 Eurogamer report (opens in new tab), Playground had been chipping away at Fable 4 for a few years with a team of about 200 on an open-world action RPG. Phil Spencer has already confirmed that Microsoft will have 14 first-party titles on the stage at its E3 briefing come June 9. The game is built using Unreal Engine and will also sport some form of multiplayer. It will reportedly take quite a few cues from Bethesda's flavour of RPGs, with an in-depth character creator and the freedom to entirely ignore the main quest if the player so desires. In terms of gameplay, the game is said to be 'completely open' and will have options for both first-person and third-person play. It will also feature the return of series mainstays like Jack of Blades, Theresa, and the Hero's Guild, who were able to survive by relocating to another planet using a Demon Door. The game will be set far into the future after the meteor strike and sheds the industrial revolution setting of the later games for a return to the medieval roots of the Fable series.
